The eyeglass frame is made from many different composites and formulations, but the most basic combination is metal, acetate and plastic.
In plastics, Zyl is the most common, although lower quality plastics are used in less expensive frames. Nylon is commonly used in sports sunglasses because of its impact resistance and flexibility. Among these metals, Monel is the most common, followed by titanium, stainless steel, nickel silver, alpaca and aluminium.
METAL FRAMES
Generally, the frame is made of metal, titanium or an alloy (a mixture of metals) that withstands wear. The titanium frame is very strong, lightweight and corrosion-resistant. They are hypoallergenic – an important consideration for those who are allergic to certain metals such as nickel. For larger children, these frames are a good choice because they are strong. PLASTIC FRAMES
Plastic frames are the most popular choice because they are usually cheaper, lighter, and come in a variety of colours and styles. Types of plastic frames include: Zyl (zylonite, or cellulose acetate) is inexpensive, lightweight, and available in a variety of colours. Cellulose propionate is a hypoallergenic, lightweight nylon-based plastic. It can be a bit softer than other plastic frames. ACETATE FRAMES
Acetate is also known as cellulose acetate, Zyl or zylonite. Acetate is one of the earliest synthetic fibres. Acetate is composed of a polymer extracted from wood (tree) pulp and/or natural cotton fibers. Over the years, these cellulose fibres have been replaced by cheaper options such as nylon and polyester, both of which are petroleum-based plastics.
